Default RIP NIU Students

Such a tragic event, to think ******bags need to prove something to the world and take other innocent lives for nothing. NOTHING! I myself attend NIU and was not too far from the incident. I really didn't realize what was going on until our group of peers and others near the Hall heard screaming in the Lecture Hall itself. We didn't know what was going on, didn't think much of it until people started stampeding out. I remember faintly someone running out with the rest of them shouting "he's got a ****** gun, GET OUT".. Was quite shocking, and I still can't believe I was near this event.. You go on everyday thinking nothing major will happen near you or to you...

I pray for the souls of the students who had their lives taken away. They were just regular young adults who were just getting ready to leave class and enjoy the rest of their days, hopeful, with friends, family, and a bright future ahead.

Also interesting fact, we on campus were at first told and other students claim they saw a cop take a shot at the gunman which killed him, and in fact that he did not kill himself.. Now the news is reporting differently. I don't know what's up with that.

Please, lets keep any opinions about American society out of this thread. There is no need for it at all.

I can't believe how many stories of cases like this there are nowadays. I'm getting so sick of this.

Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

I was a teaching assistant at NIU a few years ago, and I cannot even imagine how I would react if someone pulled that off in one of my classes. It is ridiculous how people can feel the need to take out their frustrations so recklessly and violently on others, even if they are 'off their medications'.

I think I CAN understand how someone could do that---I have a friend whose boyfriend has a good case of depression....he doesnt like to take his meds either (a guy thing???) and when he is off of them he gets really freaking scary---he HAS threatened to kill himself and others. I told my friend to get rid of him, but she insists he is ok when he is on his meds and she loves him .

I think my friend should seek some counseling as well.

Depression and other psychiatric diseases requiring medication are things that those of you who have never had them cant completely grasp. People hear voices telling them to do things, people have complexes that everyone is out to get them, etc....these people NEED help---and when they refuse it, thats when really bad things can happen.
I dont condone what this guy did, however, if he has a disease and was off his meds I can see how he did it.

I have a niece who was planning on attending niu next fall---I have friends who live in DeKalb, I went to school with people who had transfered from there. It is very scary the time we live in, and I concur that its a pretty messed up world were are in....and I have no clue how to fix it.

Many prayers go out to the family's and friends of the victims ---not just those who have past, but also those who have been left behind to try and figure out how and why such a gruesome thing could/did take place.

Some medications have side effects including suicidal tendancies. There are cases where people don't take their medicine just because the side effects are worse than the symptoms. For example a noted radio personality, Glenn Beck, earlier this year acknowledged that the pain medicine his doctors were giving him after a surgery made him so messed up he would have used a gun on himself if given the oppertunity. So he decided to live with the physical pain instead and quit taking the medicine.

I feel sorry for everyone there, that had to be one of the most horrible experiences.

''A girl got hit in the eye?" Kind of just makes you think how horrible it is.. I'd probably have a heart attack on the spot.

R.I.P to the lost ones, yet more wonderful lives taken by one bad one.

Uggg, every time I read thing like this it scares the crap out of me. It just shows that some doctors really are lazy ass idiots only after a quick fix.

Psyhopharmacas should ONLY be used as a support for an actual treatment, and not given away to patients just so they feel better.

I sincerely hope this person has a decent doctor who is also searching for the cause of the depressions and not only relieving the symptoms. If hes only giving drugs to surpress the depression hes and idiot, because all hes doing is pushing back the time when he will "flip out".

Its much like stress in a normal person (for comparison) if you just surpress it the whole time you will be pilling up that stress on the inside of you. At some point you will have accumulated so much stress that you are totally frustrated and do something stupid.
On the other hand, if you find the cause of the stress and can manage to alleviate it, you will cut of this cycle at the root.

Yea, RIP the victims. Its jusuta shame that these people find the need to take a stupid act (suicide) and make it even dummer and have even less point by combining it with murder. ;(

EDIT: From the news link posted above;

Ermmmm, yea... I kinda think that would be a good sign that someone was alive.

Edit2: Yes Slane, Im aware of that... Ive bolded the imortant bit which supports what you say

i guess you don't get the point of the meds - the psychologist has to prescribe them. depression isn't something that can be a 'quick fix' with pills or without pills. like cosyfiep said, you can't exactly grasp what it feels like if you haven't had it. the point of them is 100% for the patient to feel better, but not for a quick fix.
in case you do not know depression is chemical related, so yeah, it requires medication.

as for the shooting - the guy was messed up, but he is not 100% to blame.

Yea but i heard he had absolutely no reason to do this. He was a top student and had a bright future... Granted depression is a serious issue, it can be self controlled especially without the harming of others, even if you aren't thinking rationally. Yes it does vary from person to person, but there is no excuse for the killing of those innocent people.

Anti-depressants are not the way to go either, sometimes they just make a person worse, its generally better to let them recover by themselves. Going out and playing sports or listening to music and talking to friends would be a better solution...

I really think that all of these mass murders are getting out of hand. The pressures of college and high school even are really high and I think something should be done to limit the stress.

In the end, i believe he was mostly if not completely responsible and depression should not be a major excuse, although it may have destroyed his rational thinking he could have easily gone to talk to someone or go outside and do an activity.
